Wright Family

Well, yesterday was last post on the "Wright" line of my family - that's I mean the information I have available. Not sure where I'll go next week but in the meantime you may want to check out MyTrees - either to search for your own family, upload your family information to the database, or you might even want to join the affiliate program there. I, Faith, can tell you this is one of the few affiliate programs I've found online that does actually pay.

Generation No. 5 - Rev. James Wright

This post is extremely long but worth the read - in following posts I will include also the wills of both Rev. James Wright and his wife Mary.

11. Rev. 'James5 Wright ('James Thomas4, 'John3, 'Thomas2, 'Thomas1)24,25,26 was born 1671 in Nottingham, Chester, PA27,28, and died May 04, 1759 in Frederick Co. , VA28. He married (1) Mary Davis2829,30. She was born December 02, 1689 in Manoakin, Somerset, MD31,32, and died August 02, 1754 in Winchester, Frderick, VA32. He married (2) 'Mary Bowater33 February 02, 1706/07 in East Nottingham MM, Chester County, Pennsylvania, daughter of 'John Bowater and 'Mary Maunder. She was born February 12, 1688/89 in London, England, and died March 06, 1764 in Fredericks, Virginia33.

Notes for Rev. 'James Wright:
The following is quoted from a book on Quaker ministers: "James Wright, an elder of the Hopewell monthly meeting, was one of the first settlers in that part of Virginia. He was a sober, honest man, grave in manners, and solid and weighty in his conversation. He was diligent in the attendance of his religious meetings, exemplary in humble waiting therein, and of sound mind and judgment. He was cautious of giving just offence to any one, and was earnestly concerned for the unity of the brethren, and the peach of the church. He appeared, say his friends, concerned him, for some time before his illness, as one who had finished his day's work, and who was waiting for his change. He was 83 years old when he died." The parents of James have not been confirmed and there are multiple reports on where he was born. James married Mary Bowater, daughter of John Bowater and Mary Maunder on Feb. 26, 1706 in East Nottingham, Chester, PA. Note that a Mary Davis is often listed as the mother of John, but Stewart Baldwin in the American Genealogist has determined that Mary Bowater must be the spouse to James Wright Sr. because of their being witnesses at different weddings of both sides of the family and other Bowater being witnesses at weddings of their children.

Research Notes: Like many researchers, I am undecided on the parentage of James Wright. I have not been able to find any conclusive evidence pointing to any specific individual. Some sources believe that James' father was one of three brothers, Joshua, Thomas or Samuel who arrived in New Jersey in 1677 from Yorkshire, England.
The naming conventions of the time would suggest that his father would be named Thomas. Normally the first born son was named after the father's father. The second born son would be named after after the mother's father. The third born son would be named after the father. James' first 3 sons in order of birth were, Thomas, John, James. One could assume from this that first born Thomas was named after James' father, second born son John was named after his mother's father John Bowater, and third born son James was named after his father.

TITL Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy, Vol. 1
CAUS Scalped by Indians

From a book on Quaker ministers come the following on James Wright
" An elder of Hopewell Monthly meeting, was one of the first settlers in that part of Virginia. He was a sober, honest man, grave in manners, and solid and weighty in his conversations. He was diligent in the attendance of religious meetings, exemplary in humble waiting therein, and of a sound mind and judgment. He was cautious of giving just offence to any one, and was earnestly concerned for the unity of the brethren, and the peace of the church. He appeared, say his friends, concerning him, for some time before his last illness as one who had finished his last day's work, and who was waiting for his change. He departed this life Fifth month 15th 1759, in the 83d year of his age.

Research Notes: Stewart Baldwin in "The American Genealogist", July/Oct. 1997 issue. She was a Bowater based on multiple pieces of evidence. Mary Wright's birthdate is listed in Feb. 12, 1689 in Hopewell Quaker records. This is off by a 1 day from being Mary Bowater's actual birthdate in English records if the 1689 date is interpreted as 1688/1689. As an orphaned young woman, Mary Bowater was received on certificate from England to live near her brother, Thomas in the Philadelphia Monthly Meeting records dated 28 4th month 1706. This is the only time she is mentioned in this country under her maiden name. By 26 11th mo 1708/9 in Philadelphia records Mary condemed her marriage as contrary to discipline. This record coincides with the estimated marriage date for Mary and James Wright. Although the Quaker records were destroyed for the time period of their marriage, later marriage records of Mary and James Wright's children include many Bowater relatives as witnesses and do not include any Davis relatives. Mary and James Wright were also listed in the relatives column for her brother, Thomas Bowater's daughter's marriage. Lastly, they have a grandson named Bowater. Stewart Baldwin's case that Mary is a Bowater is actually one of the finest pieces of genealogical analysis.

Generation No. 6 - Isaac Wright

27. Isaac6 Wright ('James5, 'James Thomas4, 'John3, 'Thomas2, 'Thomas1)38 was born May 25, 1723 in Chester Co., PA39,40, and died May 31, 1777 in Frederick Co., Virgina41. He married 'Sidney Rogers42 174043, daughter of 'John Rogers and 'Ellen Pugh. She was born 1729 in North Wales, Pennsylvania, and died Unknown44.

MEDI ElectronicResearch Notes: Hopewell MM, Virginia records of 1757 state that Isaac and his wife Sidney, along with four children, three sons aged seven, five, and five months and a daughter aged three, were attacked by Indians. Their house was left standing, but all of the live stock and most of their household goods were lost.
On 2-4-1764, Isaac Wright is "disowned", no reason is given.
On 4-8-1766, James Wright, s/o Isaac and Sidney Wright, is admitted to Membership in Hopewell MM.
On 1-4-1771, Sidney Wright "asks for her son Solomon".

From there on, no mention is made of Isaac in Quaker records.

From Court Order Book for Fredrick County, Virginia 4-4-1773: "Be it ordered that the church warders of Fredrick parish do bind Solomon Wright, s/o Isaac Wright, unto Abel Walker until he comes of age, who is to teach him to read and write and cypher and teach him the trade of a Cooper.
Mary Wright, d/o Isaac and Sidney, was bound out to Richard Ridgeway until she came of age. She was to be taught to read and write.

Fredrick County records show that Isaac's will was probated in 1777. His death was not reported by a member of his family. Fredrick County Will Book 4 pp. 368 and 369 "Inventory and appraisal of the estate of Isaac Wright, deceased, it being brought to our view by Jessee Faulkner Adm. this 31st day of the fifth month 1777", then follows a list of his belongings.

From these entries, one could assume that Isaac and Sidney had marital problems, Isaac was blamed and disowned. He moves out and takes Solomon with him. Sidney appeals to the church for custody of Solomon and gets it. By the family not reporting Isaac's death, complete alienation, is suggested.

Research Notes: Sidney moves back to Bucks County, Pennsylvania after her marriage to Isaac Pickering

Generation No. 13 - Austin Wright

I, Faith Alice Wright, have tried and tried to figure out how to share my family through this blog that could be part of the reason why I've gone years and not posted anything on this Family Tree Blog.

So what I've decided is I will do my best to track back through the years starting with my grandparents. For the next few weeks we will be concentrating on the surname Wright, my maiden name you can see. For the sake of simplicity I will copy information from my family tree program which was given to me some years ago by a distant cousin of some sort I found - you got it, online.

Starting with my grandfather Austin whom I have a son and grandson named for (Shawn Austin and Shawn Austin Jr.)

70. 'Austin13 Wright ('Harrison Columbus12, 'Waitsel Avery11, 'Jonathan Wilburn10, 'William Bailey9, 'Jonathan Wesley8, 'Solomon H.7, Isaac6, 'James5, 'James Thomas4, 'John3, 'Thomas2, 'Thomas1)48 was born July 15, 1912 in Floyd Co, Kentucky, and died September 21, 1988 in Sarasota, Florida. He married 'Isie Johnson, daughter of 'George Johnson and 'Helen Salyer. She was born May 19, 1915 in Floyd Co, Kentucky, and died May 03, 2003 in Chelsea, Washtenaw Co., Michigan.

78 vi. Jeanie Wright, born Aug 14, 1948; living. (twins)

NOTE: the numbers next to names signify the generation in the family for example my grandfather 'Austin' shows first as 'Austin13' that means he is the 13th generation in the Wright line I have traced (my father George is the 14th)
